Henry Holsinger was a pastor, publisher and leader of the Progressive Brethren. In 1865 he began publishing the Christian Family Companion. Holsinger’s paper advocated reforms for the Brethren, including salaried ministers, personal choice in dress, a new approach to missions, interest in secondary and higher education, establishment of Sunday Schools and evangelistic meetings. This publication became The Brethren Evangelist and was sold to the Brethren Church in 1892. After selling the Evangelist, Holsinger decided to write the story of the Brethren Church based on material he had gathered for many years and drawing on his personal recollections. In 1901 he completed The History of the Tunkers and the Brethren Church. The book embraces: The Church of the Brethren, The Tunkers, The seventh-Day German Baptist Church, The German Baptist Church, The Old German Baptists, and The Brethren Church, including their origin, Doctrine, biography and literature.
